Televised Violent Ramblings
Many people believe that television violence has a negative effect on society because it promotes violence. On this topic, as in many topics that I discuss, I have no decided opinion. This is the one thing that frustrates me about writing where a blatant opinion is stated. To me, I’m never able to commit fully to one side or the other. I rarely see things as black or white. Too many things are subjective to each individual. Too many things are relative, depending on the person and the surrounding circumstances. Do I see violent television as a negative thing? Personally, no. Just because I watch a movie where seven hundred people were slaughtered does not make me feel empowered to go out and slaughter seven hundred people. I see almost all media entertainment in the same way that I see commercials. It depends on the audience observing. If a lactose intolerant person sees a commercial on cheese, it will affect them a lot differently than someone who has a cheese addiction watching that same commercial. If there is someone prone to violent thoughts and fantasies, then it is more likely than not that watching television shows that display violence would make their episodes and desires a lot worse. With this in mind, if you are the type to give in easily to violence, then watching such television shows are at your discretion. But to sit back and say that violent media should be completely removed for the sake of those few who it affects in a negative way, is crippling. How are we as humans expected to grow and expand in our knowledge of self, when we depend on the government to censor our television shows for us because the ones who cannot handle the violence in a healthy manner are unable to turn it off. Also, I think that if you are in the category as the easily affected by violence people, then maybe a little bit of violent encouragement is what it will take to weed those of you out of the system. Harsh, I know. But I would rather have things out in the open than having a bunch of human time bombs walking around about to explode at any given moment. But I’m getting off topic. In general, violent television does not have a negative effect on the general population. There are the exceptions, and to all you exceptions out there, realize your limitations, your weaknesses, and do not give into them. It is entirely up to you. If you do not want something to affect you negatively, then do not participate in the negative effect. Once again, I believe my entire description was very vague. But I am just now getting back into the writing scene after almost a three year period of not picking up a pen or tapping my keys for anything other than a friendly ‘hello’. It is my hope that you will bear with me over these next few weeks or months while I work on getting my thoughts out, organized, and better worded than ever before.
